This resource is a (1) Power Point Guided Notes Presentation on Pedigrees, (2) Student Guided Notes Handout, and (3) Student Guided Notes Filled In Answer Key. Through the Power Point Guided Notes Presentation students will learn about: Pedigrees- How To Read A Pedigree Chart, and How to Write A Pedigree Chart.

  • File # 1 is the Pedigrees Power Point Guided Notes Presentation. The Presentation has 9 Slides. Slide #1: Title Page, Slide #2: What Is A Pedigree?, Slide #3: Drawing A Pedigree, Slide #4: Draw Female and Male Pedigree Symbols, Slide #5: Pedigrees Come With A Key, Slide #6: Draw Example of Pedigree Key, Slide #7: Genes and Alleles on a Pedigree, Slide #8: Pedigree Chart Genetics Problem, and Slide #9: Answer Key to Pedigree Genetics Problem.
  • File #2 is The Pedigrees Student Guided Notes Handout and Student Guided Notes Filled In Answer Key. This resource is a Microsoft Word file. Pages 1 and 2 are the Student Guided Notes Handout. This Handout has sentence frames for the student to fill in the missing words as you go through the Power Point Presentation with the class. These pages should be printed front to back, and given to the students. Pages 3 and 4 are the Student Guided Notes Filled In Answer Key. These pages have the filled in sentence that go with the Power Point Presentation. You can print off a smaller amount of Pages 3 and 4 to pass out the next day to students that were absent, or you can use this as an accommodation for your ESE or ESOL students and ask them to highlight the missing words instead of writing the missing words. Pages 3 and 4 should be printed front to back and given to the students as needed.

Resource (3-4) Pedigrees Chart Practice: Student Handout, and Power Point Step by Step Answer Key: This resource is a zip file of two files: (1) Pedigree Chart Practice: Student Worksheet and Answer Key, and (2) Pedigree Chart Practice: Power Point Answer Key. Have your students work on the Student Worksheet in class, then go over the Answers with them with the Power Point that has step by step directions for how to fill out a Pedigree Chart, and also is complete with Animations that show students answers one at at time for the Pedigree Chart Data Table, and Animations that show the correct way to fill in the Alleles in Punnett Squares.

--(1) Pedigree Chart Practice: Student Worksheet and Answer Key: The Student Worksheet has Pedigree Chart problems that focus on two families and a trait that you will track through three generations in each family. Students will: (1) read the family information, (2) draw the Pedigree Chart, (3) fill out names and genotypes of the family members, (4) fill out a data table of the family members': Sex, Genotype, and Phenotype, (5) and fill out two Punnett Squares and Calculate Percent of Probability for a trait.

  • This worksheet comes with 4 pages: Page 1 is for Family 1's Pedigree Chart and Punnett Squares, Page 2 is for Family 2's Pedigree Chart and Punnett Squares. Page 3 is the Answer Key to Family 1's Pedigree Chart, Page 4 is the Answer Key to Family 2's Pedigree Chart. Teachers should print off Pages 1 and 2 front to back to give to your students. Pages 3 and 4 can be printed or displayed as an Answer Key, and/or you can use the Power Point Answer Key to go over the step by step directions as how to draw a Pedigree Chart.

This worksheet is an easy way to begin to scaffold your students' skills of reading a Genetics Pedigree problem, constructing the Pedigree from the information, then analyzing the Pedigree data to make conclusions and draw Punnett Squares.

--(2) Pedigree Chart Practice: Power Point Answer Key: The Power Point Answer Key is 32 Slides.

  • Slides 1 and 2 introduce what a Pedigree is, and give three steps to follow to draw a Pedigree Chart.
  • Slides 3 through 17 go over step by step details of how to draw a Pedigree Chart for Family 1, track their trait of hair color over three generations, and solve two Punnett Squares. The slides that have answers for the Pedigree Chart Data Table and the Punnett Squares will have the answers appear with your mouse clicks to enable you to talk through the thought process of how the answers are arrived at.
  • Slides 18 through 32 go over step by step details of how to draw a Pedigree Chart for Family 2, track their trait of eye color over three generations, and solve two Punnett Squares. The slides that have answers for the Pedigree Chart Data Table and the Punnett Squares will have the answers appear with your mouse clicks to enable you to talk through the thought process of how the answers are arrived at
  • The Power Point Answer Key is set up to have the answers for the problems to appear with your mouse clicks on important slides. You can use the Power Point to go over the Answers to the Pedigree Chart and Punnett Square questions and have students check their work for correctness or fix answers they still needed help with. Slides 15 and 30 Power Point slide have an image of Pedigree Chart Data Table, and Slides 17 and 32 have an image of the Punnett Squares. The Answers filling in the Punnett Square will appear one at at time, and are revealed with your mouse clicks with animations. You can explain and show the students that the parent alleles from the top of the Punnett Square will "Fly Down" into their spaces on the internal boxes of the Punnett Square, and the parent alleles from the side of the Punnett Square will "Fly in from left" into their spaces on the internal boxes of the Punnett Square.

This resource is to be used when watching Amoeba Sisters: Pedigrees YouTube Video. As students watch the video they will fill in information about: What is a Pedigree, Circle Shapes for Females, Square Shapes for Males, Generation Levels, Marriage Lines, Children Lines, Dominant and Recessive Alleles and Traits, Autosome Chromosomes, Sex Chromosomes, Number of Chromosomes in Humans, Genotypes and Phenotypes, hom*ozygous Dominant, Heterozygous, hom*ozygous Recessive, Punnett Squares, Sex-Linked Traits, Females are XX Sex Chromosomes, and Males are XY Sex Chromosomes.

--Teacher Directions: Page 1 and 2 are the student handout and should be printed front to back for the students. Page 3 and 4 are the Answer Key. You can play the video on your SmartBoard for the students of your whole class to watch together, or send the students a link to play on their own individual computers with headphones. If you have a class set of student computers, this is a great addition to your Substitute Lesson Plan.
