Welcome to the Division of Movement Disorders...
The Division of Movement Disorders and Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center (PMDC) combine clinical evaluation and treatment, research, education and outreach to provide a coordinated approach to combating movement and neurodegenerative disorders. The highly integrated, multidisciplinary PMDC provides comprehensive care, and groundbreaking research brings laboratory discoveries into innovative, real-world treatments for patients. The PMDC is one of only 33 centers in the U.S. and 47 medical centers worldwide recognized by the Parkinson's Foundation as a Center of Excellence. In Virginia, VCU's center is the only one holding the elite designation. The PMDC is also a designated Huntington’s Disease Society of America Center of Excellence, a CurePSP Center of Care, and a Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) Coalition Center of Excellence.
It’s increasingly clear that while most movement disorders are neurological diseases, treatment and management require coordinated clinical care by specialists across multiple disciplines. Our clinics ensure that patients have access to movement disorder neurologists, neuropsychologists, neuropsychiatrists, and therapists (physical, occupational and speech), plus neurosurgical treatments and other disciplines.
Ongoing clinical research is necessary to achieve the important goal of finding cures for movement disorders. A unique feature of our center is the on-site collaboration of clinician specialists representing several disciplines that bring a diverse knowledge and perspective to clinical research investigations. Our movement disorders investigators are or have been engaged in a wide spectrum of translational and clinical research including multiple clinical trials and investigator-initiated projects funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as many foundations including the Parkinson’s Foundation, Michael J. Fox Foundation, and Dystonia Medical Research Foundation.
Movement Disorders Fellowship Program...
The Division of Movement Disorders offers aone-year or two-year fellowship that provides clinical training in the diagnosis and management of movement disorders. Fellows can expect in-depth exposure to a broad spectrum of common and rare movement disorders, involvement in clinical and translational research and electives tailored to their specific goals and interests. Fellows will also be trained in the use of botulinum toxin injections along with surgical approaches such as deep brain stimulation to treat movement disorders.Click here to learn more about our Movement Disorders Fellowship Program.

About the Chief
Brian D. Berman, M.D., is a professor of neurology and director of VCU’s Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center.
He joined VCU in September 2020 after a decade on faculty at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus where he diagnosed, cared for and treated patients in the Movement Disorders Clinic at UCHealth and in the Neurology Clinic at the Denver Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center. He also served as associate director of Research at the University of Colorado Movement Disorders Center.
His research interests include using advanced brain imaging methods and non-invasive neurostimulation strategies to study what happens to brain structure and function when a patient develops Parkinson’s disease or dystonia. By developing neuroimaging biomarkers, he hopes to equip physicians with tools to make better and earlier diagnoses. Additionally, Berman is investigating disruptions to deep sleep in Parkinson's disease to determine whether these disruptions lead to accelerated cognitive decline and neurodegeneration in patients.
