Max Baca Obituary - 2023 (2024)

It is with great sadness we announce that Max Baca, 94, of Las Cruces, New Mexico has passed through the gates of heaven on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at 10:30 a.m.

Max was born in Lemitar, New Mexico to Epifanio and Hipolita Baca on June 23, 1928. He went to school in Albuquerque and was married to Victoria J. Montoya of Albuquerque. He was a self-employed business owner and operator of Sewing Machine Distributors of New Mexico in Las Cruces for over 50 years. He was a veteran of WWII and served in the U.S. Army with Honorable Discharge.

He was very much involved in the community, he coached at the Boys Club, an avid member the Police Athletic League as an assistant coach at Golden Gloves Boxing Team with Sammy Burke Sr. and Chico Seguro. He also served on the Board of Munson Senior Citizen and started Meals on Wheels here in Las Cruces, served as Board member of Bank of America Committee that provided aid for home improvements, served on the Board of the Republican Committee in L.C. and was passionate in assisting and serving the Native Americans.

Max Baca is preceded in death by Victoria Montoya, Epifanio and Hipolita Baca, Mary Atencio, Esau Baca, Epifanio (Eppie) Baca Jr. and David McVann.

He is survived by Cynthia Peterson of Morro Bay, Portia Higginbotham and husband Dan of Atascadero, Deborah B. AlQanai and husband Bader of Kuwait, Max J. Baca of Las Cruces, Camille B. O’Donnell of Capitan, Yvette Baca of Las Cruces and Celeste B. McVann of Las Cruces. Other survivors include 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Serving as Pall Bearers will be Matthew Baca, Mona AlQanai and service members.

Funeral services begin with the Recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at La Paz -Graham’s Funeral home. Then on Thursday, January 19, 2023, the Celebration of the Mass 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral, then a full military burial service at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, followed with a reception held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Finley Hall.
